Good Food this New Year pt 2

Continuing from the previous post, here’s another list of good food served on New Year.

1. Black-eyed Peas

In Southern America, black-eyed peas are thought to bring wealth because they look like little coins.

2.  Omochi

Omochi

Omochi, a popular Japanese dessert,  is soft and smooth, refreshing to taste. It is made of stidcky rice paste, with fillings like mashed sweet beans or peanuts inside.  It is eaten as it-is, or served with soups or other dishes.  In Japan, omochi cakes are eaten by family, considered to bring opportunity of luck and good health.

Cotechino con Lenticchie

Cotechino con Lenticchie, Italian dish is simply pork sausage served over lentils.  Cotechino sausage is a symbol of abundance because they are rich in fat; while green and coin-shaped lentils symbolise money.

4. Grape

Every year since, Spanish people have brought in the New Year by eating 12 grapes as the clock strikes midnight. At each strike of the Plaza del Sol clock, another grape is eaten in celebration of lucky years past, and in hope of a lucky year to come.

Good Food this New Year pt 1

Happy New Year to you all !

As we say goodbye to 2008 and usher  into 2009, there are lovely memories as well as pain in the ass ones.

Now that today is the 1st day of 2009, I’ll show you food that served on New Year.

1. Noodle

Being a Malaysian Chinese, I know that noodles, for example La Mien (拉面) (long noodle), are served on New Year. It symbolises longevity and continous good fortune.

2. Fish

Fish are served in Asia, European and North America on New Year. In Chinese culture, fish or yu (鱼) in Mandarin is symbolised with abundance, also pronunced as yu (余).

3. Pomegranate

Pomegranate

Some countries like Turkey and other part of Mediterranean countries eat pomegranate. It associated with abundance and fertility.

4. Cabbage

Associated with moeny because of the colour green, people eat cabbage in Ireland, USA and Germany during New Year.
