What is Kawasaki Disease?
Kawasaki Disease is an uncommon disease that affect children aged 5-year and below. Sometimes it does affect older children too. Kawasaki Disease causes inflammation to the blood vessels that supply heart with blood.

What are the symptoms?

  • White part of the eye is red
  • redder lips, mouth and tongue
  • red hands & feets
  • rash
  • swollen gland in the neck

What causes Kawasaki Disease?
Currently there is no known cause and why some children may get the disease.

What happens inside the child’s body?
Kawasaki Disease causes swelling to the coronary arteries, the vital blood vessels that supply blood to the heart. That’s how the heart works.

How Kawasaki Disease affects the heart?
While the heart supply blood and oxygen to the whole body, it itself needs bloody and oxygen to function well. If left untreated, Kawasai Disease may cause damage to the heart as the child grows up into adulthood.

Any treatment to Kawasaki Disease?
There is no single medicine that can cure the disease. However, a few medicines are used to reduce the effect, such as aspirin and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG).

How do we spot affected arteries?
An echocardiogram is run on the child with Kawasaki Disease. The ultrasound of the heart allows us to see if there’s any wrong with the coronary arteries.

Usually you can consult with a pediatrician, an emergency doctor or your family doctor.

What happen after treatment?
Children with Kawasaki Disease will continue to be monitored for another 6 months to one year. Echocardiogram is tested on the children. Aspirin is to be taken if neccessary.

Will my child develop heart disease in the future?
At the present we are not certain, but we do recommend that children with Kawasaki Disease to live a healthy lifestyle, taking a well-balanced diet, active in sports. Don’t pick up smoking or excessive drinking habits.

Ketogenic Diet – Treatment to Epilepsy in Children?

What is seizure?
Our brain contains billions of neutrons that communicate among themselves by sending and receiving electrical impulses. And when there’s something wrong or abnormal in the activity, it cause a sezisure.

Seizure in children alters their level of awareness, changes in behavior, and/or muscle contractions and movements. Usually, seizure only last a few seconds or minutes. However, if it occurs several times in the past, your children might have Epilepsy.

Why does it happen?  
Nobody knows why children suffer seizure, but they do rarely suffer long-term harmful side effect due to it. Most seizures can be controlled with medication, and the risk of seizures often declines as a child grows older. 

There are chances that fevers cause seizure in children. Poor diet and lack of water will result very low blood sugar and dehydration in the body. They too can trigger seizure.

What is the treatment?
The first step is always consult your doctor. The decision to treat a child who has recurrent seizures depends upon medical and seizure history – the type and number of seizures, setting in which seizures occurred, child’s age and family concerns. 

A complete physical examination is important. Doctor or medical practitioner will conduct a series of physical exams to evaluate a child with seizure.

An electroencephalogram or EEG for short, is a test to measure neutrons activity in your brain. The test is performed on a child with seizure to search for any abnrmoality in the brain wave. Any information gathered is crucial in determining where and why the seizure happens.

Antiepileptic drugs or AEDs is one of the medications that will be sued to prevent epilepsy. Healthcare provider usually considers the type of seizure or epilepsy that is suspected, as well as the properties of the various drugs that might be prescribed when choosing an AED. 

Ketogenic Diet is…?
Ketogenic Diet is a specially developed diet in 1920’s. It’s a diet that is extremely high in fat. A child with epilepsy is required to eat four times as many fat calories as calories from protein or carbohydrate. By reducing the number of carbohydrates a person eats, the body is forced to burn fat for energy.

Fasting too, has been a traditional seizure treatment for centuries, but it is not really neccesary for children.

Moshe, MD, Director of Clinical Neurophysiology and Child Neurology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, “It’s very important that a family have a doctor and a dietician working with them on this diet; otherwise, it won’t work and it isn’t even safe.”

New Year Resolution – Get Kids to Eat Healthily

Tired of all the crying, shouting, yelling and screaming ?

You want your kids to finish their vegetable but they won’t budge.  You all fold your arms around your chests and stare at each others. You at your kids and your kids at you?

Well, I could see how this story will unfold.

To parents who have kids, healthy eating is important for proper growth of their kids. After all, parents want their children to grow stronger and healthier, so they give their best, by serving the brats with a wide variety of nutrient-enriched food and drinks.

And then that’s when all the trouble begins…

Here are a few ways to get them to eat:

1.  Knowing facts about the food we eat. There is high-protein, high-fiber food that works for kids.

2. Tell kids that junk food is a no-no. Show them pictures of obese men and women and ask if that’s what they wish to grow up to be. 

3.   Be role model to your children. Start a healthy diet routine and using healthy recipes in your cooking.  This kickoff  life patterns that will set in childhood and early puberty.

4. Lure your kids to eat healthy food by learning how to present your cooking in colorful, creative and decorative manner. Good food doesn’t have to taste bland.

5. Educate kids about the food, tell them the benefits of eating such food. Make them feel that they are eating something special and different each day.

May your kids eat well and grow healthy and happy.
